International businessman Sudhir Choudhrie is widely known for his success in the import-export sector, having established the Magnum International Trading Company based in his birth city of Delhi, India. He’s also known as a principal founder of London’s C & C Alpha Group, a prominent private equity firm. Over the past five decades, Choudhrie has invested in everything from aviation to athletic shoes.
But Sudhir Choudhrie, today a citizen of the U.K., has developed a reputation as among the most remarkable collectors of vintage automobiles in the world. In a spacious garage in Delhi are stored an astonishing array of cars of ancient pedigree fully rebuilt to pristine condition. This includes Rolls Royce models handcrafted and cobbled together in the 1890s. A large portion of his collection is Mercedes Benz specimens that pre-date 1938 and include models that were built around 1900 and more
Also, in the collection of Sudhir Choudhrie are some of the first French automobiles. In fact, one of the oldest models of its kind still in existence in the world, the Cottereau 7hp Voiturine, belongs to Sudhir Choudhrie. The car is fully operational. The Voiturine was manufactured by auto pioneers Henri and Lois Cottereau. These enterprising men were among the first to export their cars to India. Choudhrie’s collector sports a single-cylinder engine that is water-cooled. It is fitted with a chain drive and a 3-speed gearbox. Even more fascinating is that this particular Voiturine was owned by the Maharaja of Patilia. Another amazing item in Choudhrie’s collection is a French Darracq Type V, a 12hp car that was affordable. At the height of production, about 14 Darracq’s rolled out of the manufacturing facility every day. This company was founded by Alexander Durracq in 1897.
