Entertainment Lawyer Damien Granderson and J Balvin

In the past few years, your client J Balvin has seemingly exploded onto the scene. Is that because people ask for his help or because he genuinely wants to get involved?

Artists, Damien Granderson says, are always the starting point. Their management, business management, agents, lawyers, and other trusted advisors are all in the loop about the company’s grand aspirations. From that vantage point, it’s your responsibility to generate possibilities for them and help screen any potential prospects that may present themselves.

Then, you lend a hand by suggesting other transactions that advance their mission and vision. Talent and ambition are essential from the very beginning. I didn’t go to music school or come from a musical family like most others who work in the industry. In my first year of law school, Damien Granderson kept on, I stumbled into employment at Warner Chappell.

Honestly, I didn’t know the distinction between record labels and publishing houses because I was planning on going into real estate and was interested in property law. During my interview, Damien Granderson adds, I was told that the company deals with IP. The idea of real estate was not foreign to me. The concepts of copyright law, trademark, and other copyright features fascinated me. This is a topic that continues to pique my interest.

For as long as I can remember, music has been an integral part of my and my family’s life. Damien Granderson recalls: It’s in our blood and always has been. I worked as a legal assistant at a prestigious litigation company with a little entertainment practice after completing my undergraduate degree at Stony Brook University in New York (Instagram).

At that point, I learned that there were legal professionals whose job was to facilitate business dealings between artists, ensure their safety during these arrangements, and maximize the potential of their endeavors. As an entertainment lawyer, I never imagined there was a career path that would allow me to combine my interest in music with my desire to make a positive impact on the lives of musicians. This is how entertainment Lawyer Damien Granderson talks about his career.
